Overweight and obese people are far more likely to suffer from sleep apnea, a sleep disorder that can be fatal. During sleep your muscles relax to stop you from acting out dreams. If the muscles in the throat become too relaxed due to drinking alcohol, allergies, or lying on your back they can flop down into the airways causing a partial blockage.

If you are overweight you have a greater muscle mass in the neck and throat area and this could result in a total blockage in the airways. This can occur many times during the night and last for several seconds.
